premium book printing, we deliver industry-leading quality...

about...

We work with designers, photographers, publishers and self-publishers to manufacture short-run books and booklets of unmatched quality and customization. We offer perfect bound books, wire-o, plastic coil and saddle-stitch binding.

We are focused on building long-term relationships with our customers, and strive to offer a more personalized and accommodating self-publishing and book production service.

Our wide selection of fine materials, beautiful printing, custom formatting, and hands-on personal service allow our customers to create the books they envision.

Keystone's Philadelphia area production facility maintains a unique array of in-house capabilities which allow us to produce truly custom, well made books and booklets in quantities as low as twenty five copies. Our books are the result of handmade craftsmanship combined with the most innovative and proven machinery available.

The book manufacturing environment continues to be characterized by shorter run lengths as publishers seek to minimize risk through the optimization of inventory levels. In response to this, Keystone Digital Press has expanded our digital printing offerings to include short-run book manufacturing, print-on-demand, and book component production as part of our internal capabilities. Our complete new line of equipment enables Keystone to meet the increasing market demand for digital printing services.

what type of color printing are you really buying?

the first question...

The first question and most important question that you must ask your book printer:
Do you use ink jet printers or toner-based printers?

Here’s the difference:

Inkjet printing is usually sold as Standard Color or Economy Color. It uses a technology where ink is literally sprayed on the page. Think of hundreds of inkjet heads in rows. As the paper passes beneath, these heads spray various amounts of color to build up the ink coverage. This is definitely not recommended for any books with color pictures or graphics. It’s virtually impossible to get crisp, precise photo-quality images. Inkjet printing is a low-cost printing process usually reserved for cheap advertisement printing like supermarket coupons.

Toner based printing is usually sold as Premium Color. Keystone color printing is 100% toner-based printing. We utilize Ricoh Pro presses in our shop, the best of the best in new color printing technology. From the first page of a job to the last, you can expect consistent, vibrant color. A new chemical toner formulation promotes high charging stability, and a new image transfer belt material optimizes the fill and appearance of each pixel. The result is superior, photo-quality image printing on every page.

why print your book with keystone digital press?

our formula...

Our formula for great custom book printing is very simple: Keystone Digital Press is a book printing company staffed by print professionals utilizing the world's best book printing and binding equipment. While every individual book publishing project is different, the results are always the same:

Book Printing

  • Printed in-house in our Philadelphia-area facility by our team of experienced book printing and book bindery professionals.

  • Whether you are publishing a simple gallery catalog or a high-end promotional piece, we offer a range of cover decoration options that will allow you to create a beautiful, custom book cover.

  • Cover Laminate
Laminate provides both strength and beauty to your book’s cover. We strongly recommend adding it to your printed softcover. We can apply either gloss, semi-matte,or soft touch matte laminate to softcover books. Gloss laminate provides a high sheen finish which is resistant to dirt and smudging, while soft touch matte laminate feels softer in the hands. Semi-matte laminate is scuff proof, offering much of the protection gloss laminate provides without the shiny surface. When choosing your laminate, please consider that matte laminates dulls dark colors, while a gloss laminate preserves a rich black. This may alter the appearance of your cover.

Smooth Uncoated

This paper is best for art, photography and illustration books. The super smooth surface and bright white base allow for the most accurate and vivid color reproduction. If you have many images in your books, this is likely the best paper for your book. We stock this paper in three weights, and the page count of your book will dictate which weight will be used. In this stock we carry 50lb, 60lb, 70lb, 80lb and 100lb text weight.

Bright White Uncoated Text

We suggest using this paper for books which are primarily text, such as poetry, fiction and memoirs. This paper is slightly rougher and toothier than our photo & art paper described above. Color images still print very nicely on this stock, though it feels more appropriate for text based books. We stock this paper in 50lb, 60lb, 70lb and 80lb text weight, though lighter weights are available for books with high page counts.

Cougar Natural Tone (warm white) Uncoated Text
warm white

This paper is identical to the paper described above, but with a pleasing warm white color. Natural tone papers are considered to be easier on the eyes than bright white papers, and are frequently used for poetry books, novels, and any other text based book which does not contain many, if any images. Color images will not print accurately on this stock as the paper base is not a true white. We stock this paper in 50lb and 60lb text weight, though lighter weights are available for books with high page counts.

Bright White Uncoated Vellum

We have added this luxurious vellum paper to our line in response to our customers request to have a more toothy paper for their books. This is a bright white paper with good opacity and thickness. The vellum surface texture appears slightly more matte than the super smooth uncoated stock. Color images print well on this paper, though blacks will not print quite as dark as they would on the Super Smooth Uncoated described above. We stock this paper in 70lb text weight only.

Spine Width

To determin the width of your book spine divide the number of pages by the ppi of the paper you chose. Example: a 200 page book printed on 70lb. Smooth (426 ÷ 200 = 0.469"). For more information see cover layout.
